One of the areas traditionally lacking in risk management education programming is diverse partnering between public and private industry for development and delivery of content and materials. Excellent programs are often created in a vacuum by one segment of the industry without participation from another segment that may be in a better position to deliver the information. For example, crop insurance agents usually have a vast knowledge of different insurance products, but are lacking in a widespread distribution network. By partnering with county extension agents or farm commodity organizations, that information is leveraged to a much larger number of producers. As another example, extension agents are not always the preferred information delivery mechanism for producers in every county. In some cases it's the local ag lender, agricultural education instructor, Farm Service Agency staff or other community leader. Each local farm community dictates that they respect and rely on for information.

The goal of creating public/private partnerships is to provide as many crossover opportunities to reach audiences as possible, recognizing that producers get their information from a variety of different sources.

Richard Owen, Executive Vice President of the Montana Grain Growers Association, serves as a consultant to the Western Center for RME to assist educators in identifying and implementing effective partnerships between the public and private sectors. In this role, Richard conducts training sessions for risk management educators, provides communication of successful partnerships through newsletters and e-mail, provides one-on-one consulting to identify local and regional partners and serves as in a consultative role to the Western Center for RME Advisory Council. Richard can be reached at rtowen@mgga.org or (406) 761-4596.
